BE-GOOD: Optimising government data
The demand for government information on infrastructure and the environment has always been strong in North-West Europe. However, for a considerable time, access to this vital information remained limited. This changed with the introduction of the BE-GOOD project, which has made this information available to a wider audience.
BE-GOOD has unlocked the commercial potential of governmental information through its 10 pilot projects. By making this data more public and aligning it with market needs, BE-GOOD has also promoted innovation and enhanced usability.
This strategic approach has led to the development of different tools and systems. These include applications and software for traffic management algorithms, air and water quality control mechanisms, and citizen interaction to improve public services, such as traffic management and social inclusion.
Moreover, this increased access to data has improved information availability and collaborative digital services for authorities, small and medium-sized enterprises and citizens.
The BE-GOOD project’s value for Rijkswaterstaat
BE-GOOD was established to optimise the use of government information on infrastructure and the environment in North-West Europe.
For Rijkswaterstaat, the project was invaluable for several reasons. Based on the increased access to data and innovative digital technologies, RWS developed dashboards for road maintenance planning and more data-driven asset management.
It has enabled Rijkswaterstaat to gain a deeper understanding of its asset management system. At the operational level, it can be used to improve asset management towards contracts that include more predictive maintenance.
At a tactical level, it can be used to improve the planning of the national infrastructure in close cooperation with the private sector, e.g. engineering and maintenance companies, especially with regard to needs, human capital development and the capacity to meet these needs.
It has also enabled Rijkswaterstaat to play a proactive role in shaping future European legislation. Most importantly, BE-GOOD became a gateway for Rijkswaterstaat to access key knowledge and open up new market opportunities.
