VIA APPIA

VIA APPIA was the Virtual Reality & Augmented reality and Artificial intelligence Partner Programme for Industrial Application. It was a field lab set up by the World Class Maintenance Foundation (WCM).

The lab’s mission was to make high-tech applications like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) easier to use for everyday industrial tasks, such as maintenance and service.

By synthesising the collective knowledge, experience and strengths of the project participants, the lab identified more effective and strategic uses of these applications.

Rijkswaterstaat was part of this innovative project. We already work with other forward-looking partners to develop new products and methods that use AI. As a result, we are gradually adopting a more data-driven approach to our work. Ultimately, VIA APPIA supports our asset management development and digitises our global strategy.

Challenges

VIA APPIA faced several exciting challenges. The key questions we addressed include:

  • How can we effectively integrate these high-tech tools into a factory environment?
  • Are they sufficiently resilient to support us in making critical decisions?
  • What’s the best way to share the knowledge we gain?

Communities of practice

During the project’s initial phase, applications were developed through communities of practice, fostering shared understanding and learning. The knowledge products emerging from this partnership will be implemented and validated in Living Labs.

Living Labs are industrial environments that serve as pilot projects. Ultimately, lessons learned, best practices and insights gained from the VIA APPIA project are shared with the broader industry through the WCM counter, a dedicated service desk.
